No Sound After High Sierra Update? Here’s the fix


Many Mac users have a complaint that Mac OS High Sierra sound not working. The said that everything was fine before installing high sierra.  Here I am going to tell you the solutions for Mac OS high Sierra sound problems.
Before trying these Solutions, Restart your Mac via Apple Menu->Restart. Sometimes, restart itself will solve if any audio issues on your Mac.
Solution 1: Force Restart

  1. Press and hold the Power Button until your mac Turns off.
  2. Again press the Power Button to turn it on.

Solution 2: Check for internal speakers
Try this solution when no sound while listening via Mac’s built-in speakers.

  1. Unplug headphones/external speakers from your Mac.
  2. Go to Apple Menu->System Preferences->Sound->Output.
  3. Select “Internal Speakers”.
  4. Make sure that Output volume is full. Drag the slider to adjust the volume if the slider is on the left side.
  5. Make sure that Mute checkbox is not selected.
  6. Select “Show volume in the menu bar”.no sound after high sierra update

Note: If you enable “Show volume in the menu bar” option, you can adjust the volume on your home screen itself.
Solution 3: Check for external speakers
Try this solution when you don’t hear a sound via External speakers.

  1. Connect the speaker to Mac.
  2. Go to Apple Menu->System Preferences->Sound->Output.
  3. Make sure that you can see the name of the speaker you connected. For example, if you plug the headphones to mac, you can see Headphones under Name and Headphone port under Type.
  4. If Headphones are not selected, select it first.
  5. Make sure that Output volume is full. Drag the slider to adjust the volume if the slider is on the left side.
  6. Make sure that Mute checkbox is not selected.mac os high sierra no sound

Note: if the plugged speakers name is not displayed, unplug the speaker and plug them again.
Solution 4: Reset NVRAM/PRAM

  1. Turn off your Mac via Apple menu->Shut Down.
  2. Press the Power Button to turn on your Mac.
  3. Then immediately press and hold the Option + Command + P + R keys simultaneously as quickly as possible after pressing the Power Button.
  4. Keep pressing until you hear the startup sound for the second time.

Solution 5: Restart your Mac in Safe Mode (Safe Boot)
Restart your Mac in Safe Mode will fix many issues including sound issues on your Mac. But you can’t use some features in Safe Mode.

  1. Turn off your Mac via Apple menu->Shut Down.
  2. Turn on your Mac.
  3. Press and hold the Shift Key as quickly as possible after you hear the startup sound. You can see the Apple Logo on the Screen.
  4. Keep pressing the Shift Key until you see the Login Window.
  5. Enter your User Name & Password to login. You may need to login twice if FileVault is turned on.

Solution 6: Reinstall High Sierra
Reinstall High Sierra may solve your problem.

  1. Turn off your Mac and press the Power Button to turn it on.
  2. Press and hold the Command+R keys simultaneously as soon as possible after pressing the Power Button.
  3. Keep pressing Command+R keys until the Apple Logo appears.
  4. After that Utilities windows will appear with 4 options. Tap “Reinstall macOS”.
  5. Tap “Continue”.
  6. You will be prompted to choose your disk. If you are not asked to select your disk, tap “Show All Disks”. You may need to enter your Apple ID.
  7. Tap “Install”. Wait until the installation process is completed. Your Mac will restart after completing the installation.

Other Solutions:

  1. Check for Software Update.
  2. Reset SMC.
  3. Downgrade macOS High Sierra.
  4. Check Apple warranty status. If your Mac covers warranty, take it to the Apple Service Center.
  5. Make an Apple genius bar appointment.
