macOS Mojave Not Detecting/Recognizing External Display (Monitor)


Many Apple users have a complaint that macOS Mojave not detecting external monitor. Every update of macOS has some issues like this. Here I am going to tell you the solutions for Mojave not recognizing external display/monitor.
Before trying these solutions, restart your Mac. sometimes restart itself will solve all the issues.
Solution 1: Detect your Display

  1. Go to Apple Menu->System Preferences->Displays.
  2. Press and hold the Option key to show “Detect Displays” option.
  3. Click “Detect Displays” while holding the Option key.
  4. Now you can find the external display on your Mac.

Solution 2: Sleep and wake your Mac
When you use External Display, sleep and wake your Mac to check for connected external displays.

  1. Go to Apple menu->Sleep (or) just press the Power Button to put your Mac to sleep.
  2. Wait for few seconds and then press any one of a key on the keyboard (or) click the mouse/trackpad to wake your Mac.

Solution 3: Enable Show mirroring options in the menu bar

  1. Go to Apple menu->System Preferences->Displays.
  2. Enable (select) “Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available”.

Solution 4: SMC Reset
If your Mac has a non-removable battery,

  1. Shut down your Mac via Apple menu->Shut Down.
  2. Press and hold the Shift + Control + Option + Power Button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
  3. Then release the keys at the same time.
  4. Press the Power Button to turn on your Mac.

If your Mac has a removable battery,

  1. Shut down your Mac via Apple menu->Shut Down.
  2. Remove the battery from your Mac.
  3. Press and hold the Power Button for 5 seconds.
  4. Insert the battery into your Mac.
  5. Turn on your Mac.

Solution 5: Update DisplayLink driver
One of the mac users said that updating DisplayLink driver worked for him perfectly. Click here to update DisplayLink driver on your Mac.
If it doesn’t work out,

  1. Remove (uninstall) DisplayLink driver.
  2. Reboot your Mac.
  3. Install the latest DisplayLink driver and restart your Mac. Click Here to install the latest one.

Solution 6: Check for Software Update

  1. Go to Apple menu->App Store.
  2. Click “Updates” tab.
  3. Update macOS/firmware if available.

Solution 7: Restart your Mac in Safe Mode
Restarting your Mac in Safe Mode will fix many issues in the Mac. But you can’t use some features in Safe Mode.

  1. Turn off your Mac via Apple menu->Shut Down.
  2. Press the Power Button to turn on your Mac.
  3. Press and hold the Shift Key immediately after pressing the Power Button.
  4. You can see the Apple Logo on the screen. Don’t leave the Shift key when you see the Apple Logo.
  5. Keep pressing the Shift Key until you see the Login Window.
  6. Select your User Account and then enter the Password to login. You may need to login twice if FileVault is turned on.

Note: If it doesn’t work out, leave Safe Mode and then try next solution. To leave Safe Mode, restart your Mac via Apple menu->Restart. Wait until your Mac restarts.
Solution 8: Reinstall macOS Mojave (Recovery Partition)

  1. Turn off your Mac via Apple menu-> Shut Down.
  2. Press the Power Button to turn on your Mac.
  3. Press and hold the Command + R keys simultaneously as soon as possible after pressing the Power Button.
  4. Keep pressing Command + R keys until the Apple Logo appears.
  5. After that macOS Utilities windows will appear with 4 options. Tap “Reinstall macOS”.
  6. Tap “Continue”.
  7. You will be prompted to choose your hard disk/drive. If you are not asked to select your disk, tap “Show All Disks”. You may need to enter your Apple ID.
  8. Tap “Install”. Wait until the installation process is completed.
  9. Your Mac will restart after completing the installation.

Other Solutions:

  1. Change your DisplayPort Adapter and try the new one. Because the problem may be in the DisplayPort Adapter.
  2. Restore your Mac to Factory Settings
