How to Transfer Data from Old Mac to a New MacBook Pro

Before transferring your entire data, there are a couple of things you should consider. Make sure that,

  • Both Macs should be updated to the latest macOS.
  • Both Macs are connected to the same and stable Wi-F- network.

Steps to move data from old Mac to new MacBook Pro

On your new MacBook

  • Launch Migration Assistant from the Launchpad.
  • Then click Continue (All other Apps will quit when you click to continue).
  • Now the Migration Assistant asks, “How do you want to transfer your information?”
  • Select the first option: “From a mac, Time machine backup, or startup disk” option.
  • And tap the Continue button.

On your old MacBook

  • Do the above things on your old Mac too (Launch Migration Assistant) but this time select the 3rd option, “To another Mac”.
  • And tap the Continue button.

Open Migration Assistant on both New MacBook and Old MacBook

On your new MacBook 

  • On your MacBook Pro, select your old Mac from the list of available computers.
  • Then tap Continue. 

Select your old Mac on new Mac and click Continue

On your old MacBook 

  • After that, wait for your old Mac to display the same passcode as your new Mac.
  • And tap Continue.

Check the passcode for both old Mac and new Mac

On your new MacBook 

  • Choose the information that you want to transfer from your old Mac (includes files, emails, user account, and so on) to the new MacBook Pro. Then tap Continue.
  • Now you need to set a password on your new MacBook Pro. For that, use your old Mac’s admin password for the new MacBook Pro.

Select the information that you want to transfer

  • After that click Continue to transfer selected information.

Transferring your information from old Mac to new Mac

  • After the migration is completed, we need to tap Done on both computers. Then login to the migrated account on your new MacBook Pro.
