How to Delete Other storage on your Mac

When it comes to the storage topics, You definitely see the other storage option on your iPhone or Mac storage disk. But most people don’t have an idea about what other storage means and where the files are stored in the other storage. And also this takes massive storage on your Mac. It's kinda suspicious right??? But here we show you what is other storage and how to delete the other storage on your Mac. Okay, let’s dive into the post.

What is Other storage on Mac?

Other storage contains what we consider to no longer need. Such as System temporary files, macOS System folder, Old-Time machine backups, iCloud files, Archives and disk images, cache files, Personal user's data files from Application support, and plugins, extension installer packages.

And one more thing is we don’t know where they are all stored exactly. If we find them, we don't have to delete all of them. Because deleting some files like Application support, and iCloud files will affect our Mac performance. So we have to be very careful in deleting those files.

How to Delete Other Storage on Mac:

Here we're gonna see how to safely delete those files on your Mac. But remember one thing after deleting the files: don't forget the empty trash bin. Therefore, it’ll stay on your Mac. So clear your trash bin also.

Delete the Installation files (DMG, PDF, Zip, CSV files)

Locating the DMG files is an easy method. Because it is stored in your finder folder. Okay, follow the below step to delete the DMG files.

  • Launch Finder on your Mac.
  • Then search This Mac in the search bar.
  • Now select the This Mac option, here you can see the dmg files(Apps installer package)

Follow the same process for your PDFs, Zip files, and CSV files also.

Clear Cache:

Delete the cache files is a more risky one. For example, if you accidentally delete the app caches that run currently on your Mac, this will be a huge problem. Also, some of the caches are important to run your Mac as well. So before deleting the cache files you need to be very careful about them.

First, we're gonna see about how to delete the System Caches on your Mac

  • Launch the Finder on your Mac.
  • Tap on the GO option.
  • From the prompt choose Go to Folder.
  • Now type Library/Caches/ and tap on Go.

  • If you don’t know whether it’s good or not, then leave them alone.

Next, we have to delete the application caches. As I said before, deleting application caches is a more risky one. Because some of the applications stored user info in their caches. So it might lose your data from that app and it may also stop running.

  • Launch the Finder on your Mac.
  • Tap on the GO option.
  • From the prompt choose Go to Folder.
  • Now type ~/Library/Caches/ and tap on Go.
  • Here are applications caches, look carefully at the folders and their files.
  • If it is okay to delete then move them into the trash bin.

After deleting the caches, don’t forget to empty the trash bin. If not, it’ll be stored on your Mac again.

Delete Unused Files/Temporary Files:

Unused files or temporary files are also a part of the other storage. So if you don't want those files, just delete them. To do that,

  • Launch the Finder on your Mac.
  • Tap on the GO option.
  • Choose Go to Folder and type ~/Library. And tap on Go.

Remove Time Machine's Local Backup:

The Time Machine local backup takes up lots of space in Other storage. So deleting this also helps to reduce storage in Other storage. For that,

Here we use the Terminal to delete the Time machine’s Local backup. It’s an easy way to safely remove those snapshots.

  • Launch the Terminal on your Mac.
  • Then type the following comment in the Terminal window. “tmutil listlocalsnapshots /”.
  • Press the enter button.
  • Now it will show you the local backup files like com. apple.Timemachine.2020-07-22-002009.
  • Okay, now we have removed this from the Time machine. To do that,
  • Paste the following command in your Terminal “sudo tmutil deletelocasnapshots”
  • Then leave a space and copy the date that shows in the local backup file command.
  • For example: “sudo tmutil deletelocasnapshots 2020-07-22-002009 ”
  • After that press the enter button.
  • Once it is complete, it will show you “Delete local snapshot ‘2020-07-22-002009’ ”.
  • That’s it.
