Why Aren't My AirPods Max Detecting My Head and How Can I Fix It?

Posted: September 12, 2024 | Updated: October 04, 2024

Someone reported that their AirPods Max fails to detect when they’re on their head. Despite trying various solutions like button resets, Bluetooth troubleshooting, and checking for firmware updates, the issue persists. The headphones remain connected, but there’s no sound, and features like Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) don’t activate, prompting messages to put on the headphones. This problem often recurs even after temporary fixes.

Solutions

Solution 1: Clean Headphone Contacts and Reattach Speakers

Try removing the speakers from the headband and cleaning the contacts.

Use an iPhone SIM card tool to insert into the hole under the mesh ear covers to release the headband from the speakers. The contacts look like mini lightning ports. After cleaning them with a microfiber cloth and reattaching the speakers, my connection issues were resolved.

Solution 2: Place the headphones in the carrying case

To fix the issue, follow these steps:

  1. Place the headphones in the carrying case.
  2. Close the case and wait a few seconds.
  3. Take the headphones out and put them back on.

This method resolves the problem about 75% of the time. If it doesn’t work, you may need to repeat the process 1 or 2 more times.

Solution 3: Clean the head-tracking sensors

  1. Remove the headband and clean the contacts.
  2. Clean the head-tracking sensors (the black dots on each side) after removing the earpads.
  3. Charge the AirPods Max to over 50% and then reset them.

Use an alcohol-based solution applied with a cloth or tissue.
