How to Turn On/Off Closed Captioning on Apple TV


If you want to turn on closed captioning and subtitle for movies and videos,

  1. Navigate to to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Closed Captions + SDH.
  2. Click the Select button on apple Remote to enable Closed captions and subtitles.

Note: Do the same steps to turn off closed captioning on Apple TV.

If your Apple TV software version is 6.0 or later, you can change the captions or subtitles styles.

  1. Navigate to to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Closed Captions + SDH.
  2. Choose the one of the style which is already predefined ( Classic or large Tex, different background color etc).

If you want to create your own style, follow the bellow steps.

  1. Choose the “Create New Style” option. You can change the text, font, size, color, opacity and background. preview of a customised new style will appear.captions style Apple TV
  2. Click the “Menu” to save the style and set it to default style.

This method is same to adjust closed captions and english subtitles for rented movies or Netflix or HBO GO on Apple TV.

There are no controls in settings to turn subtitles on/off. There is no settings/general…etc.

Wayne, yes there are. Go to settings, accessibility, closed captioning & subtitles. Click on closed captioning & subtitles to turn on or off. Mine read off even tho it was on. I clicked to turn it on and again to turn it off & the closed captioning went away.
