How to Fix "Server does not allow relaying" email error

A lot of Apple users reported this issue. After updating their iPhone to new iOS, the can’t sent email and receiving the following error message

“A copy has been placed in your outbox. The recipient “email@address” was rejected by the server because it does not allow relaying”

Devices: iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 5, iPad 2

So how to Fix this problem

Solution 1:- (for AOL users)

If this problem might happened because of AOL.com mail issue use the following steps.

Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> select your AOL.com account -> SMTP from the Account Info Page -> SMTP from the SMPT Page. Ensure the server is ON and the Host name is smtp.aol.com.

Furthermore ensure your AOL account username and password are correct and added in the outgoing mail server. Also ensure authentication is set to password and server port is 587.

Solution 2:- (for other email users)

If you are not using AOL email,

Go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts ->Account Info > SMPT

Turn off primary server and turn on other SMTP server like AT&T.

Solution 3:-

Turn off the AOL “primary server”( which has the grayed out information).

Then add an other SMTP server using “smtp.aol.com”, your aol username (without the “@aol.com” suffix) and password.

Now set up automatically as “On” under the “Other SMTP servers”.

Note: Make sure you turned off the primary server off and other SMTP server switched ON.

Solution 4:-

Go to  Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Your  Account -> Outgoing mail Server SMTP –> Primary Server. Turn the primary server on and fill with username and password under Outgoing Mail Server.

Solution 5:-

Delete your email account and add it again.

I took the Solution 4: from previous post (Thank You, btw) "Go to Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Your Account -> Outgoing mail Server SMTP –> Primary Server. Turn the primary server on and fill with username and password under Outgoing Mail Server." And ADDED one step – I Turned OFF the Use SSL.
I am using a webmail account and nothing else made it work, so I thought "what if I turn this off?"… voila! I have no idea what SSL is or does, but apparently I don't need it to send e-mail from my webmail account.

i have my yahoo account set up to use IMAP

When I configured the SMTP server to use ssl and added my yahoo user id and password the problem went away. The iPhone configure screen incorrectly say I'd and password are optional

Oh My Gosh!! Thank you SO much Stephanie! I too use a webmail account, and adding my userename and password PLUS turing off the SSL worked! Thank you!

Have verizon Email, email address and password present in outgoing mail server. Deleted and reinstalled account, still getting message. Now what?

Thanks for all of this because I just got that outgoing mail error message about placed in outbox and recipient cannot relay messages. I did all of those steps and it's showing all of these email boxes of mine stating orphaned emailed. I will cry if I lost all my email folders. I however can see some in my email but one folder which of course is the most important folder is empty. Any comments / suggestions? Thank you
