How to Remove/Delete Game Center from Mac OS X Yosemite


Game Center app available in Mac since Mountain lion. Its icon recently changed to match iOS Game Center icon. Actually i am really hate to use Game Center in iOS. Because i am annoyed with spammy friend requests.

When Mac users try to drag and drop Game Centre icon to the trash it shows error message like ““Game Center” can’t be modified or deleted because it’s required by OS X.” Actually Game Center does not have any games. It comes from the App Store.

Don’t worry. You can completely remove Game Center from mac OS X Yosemite.

How to delete game Center from Mac OS X Yosemite

Note: Do not try this method unless you knew about Mac OS Terminal, command line and have a recent hard drive backup.

  1. Open Terminal app.
  2. Navigate to the Application folder.
  3. Type the following command:
  4. sudo rm -rf "Game Center.app"
  5. Press the Enter button. That’s all. After you removing Game Center app via terminal, restart your computer.

If you update Mac OS X Yosemite, Game Center icon should reappear again.

How to hide Game Center icon

Open Terminal and type the following command.

 sudo chflags hidden /Applications/Game Center.app
1:20 pm

A good start but it doesn't prevent "gamed" from trying to phone home – you'd need to also remove the Game Centre framework files from /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks to completely exorcise this beast.

FYI: suggestion to delete Game Center.app does not work on El Capitan: getting permission denied error even without the password prompt for the sudo…
